ABC: silencing Palestinians!

The ABC appears to have taken down an interview with the president of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN), Nasser Mashni, about the Israel-Gaza conflict. Mashni, a regular on the ABC, was interviewed by afternoon TV anchor Kathryn Robinson at around 3.30pm on Monday, and was asked about Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent remarks about Israel’s actions. The interview was then uploaded to the ABC’s news site on Monday afternoon, but had been removed by Tuesday morning — although the link still appeared on Google. The footage was also removed from the ABC’s streaming service, iview. Send an email to the ABC now telling them this is completely outrageous.

That it was quietly removed within 24 hours—without explanation or accountability—exemplifies a pattern of disturbing editorial decisions by the ABC that actively marginalise Palestinian voices and perspectives.

This is not an isolated incident. The ABC has, time and again, appeared to bend to the pressure of the Zionist lobby in Australia, censoring voices critical of Israel while providing uncritical coverage of Israeli narratives. By removing Mr Mashni’s comments—where he described Israel as a rogue, apartheid, genocidal state and called for concrete action from Australia—your institution is once again aiding in the silencing of Palestinian advocacy.

This kind of journalistic malpractice contributes to the whitewashing of atrocities and the ongoing genocide being committed against Palestinians. As a taxpayer-funded public broadcaster, the ABC has a responsibility to serve the Australian public—not deranged political interest groups with genocidal agendas. When voices speaking out against war crimes and apartheid are erased from the record, the ABC becomes complicit in sustaining those very injustices.

The public deserves a full and transparent explanation for the removal of this interview. Anything less confirms what many already fear: that the ABC no longer operates as a fearless, independent broadcaster, but as a gatekeeper of narratives convenient to those in power.

I urge you to restore the interview, issue a public clarification, and recommit to journalistic integrity—before further damage is done to both your reputation and your responsibilities under your charter.
