The Sydney Morning Herald has published a dangerous article by Jeremy Leibler, president of the zionist federation, arguing that it was a 'mistake' for Israel to withdraw from Gaza, which it had been illegally occupying (all of Israel is of course an occupation) two decades ago. The article titled “Two decades ago, Israel withdrew from Gaza. It has become a cautionary tale” was published on 12 August. We must demand the article’s removal, a retraction, and a public apology. Let’s call out the Sydney Morning Herald to make it clear their propaganda doesn't work on us.

To the Editors of The Sydney Morning Herald,

On August 12, you gave a platform to Jeremy Leibler, president of the Zionist Federation of Australia, to spew historical revisionism and outright propaganda, arguing that Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza—a territory it had been illegally occupying for decades—was some kind of noble "gift" that Palestinians squandered. The article, “Two decades ago, Israel withdrew from Gaza. It has become a cautionary tale,” is not just misleading; it’s a dangerous distortion of reality that whitewashes Israel’s ongoing genocide and justifies perpetual occupation.

Let’s be clear: Gaza was never "handed over" as some magnanimous gesture. It was occupied—brutally, violently, and in violation of international law—for nearly four decades before Israel’s so-called "disengagement." And what did that "withdrawal" actually entail? A suffocating siege, relentless bombings, and a blockade that turned Gaza into the world’s largest open-air prison. To frame this as a "failed test" for Palestinians is obscene. The only test here is how long Western media will keep peddling the myth that Palestinians must earn their freedom by proving themselves worthy to their oppressors.

Leibler’s argument is pure colonial logic: "If we give them an inch and they don’t behave, we have no choice but to keep bombing them." He laments that Gaza didn’t become a "prototype for a Palestinian state"—as if Palestinians, under siege and constant attack, were ever given a real chance to build one. Meanwhile, Israel continues to steal land in the West Bank, armed settlers rampage through Palestinian villages with state backing, and Netanyahu’s government openly rejects a two-state solution. But sure, it’s Hamas that’s the problem.

And let’s talk about the hypocrisy of demanding "reforms" from the Palestinian Authority while ignoring that Israel propped up Hamas for years to undermine Palestinian unity. Or that the PA itself is a collaborationist entity with no real power, operating under the boot of Israeli military rule. The idea that Palestinians must meet some arbitrary standard of "good governance" before deserving basic rights is racist nonsense. No other oppressed people are held to such a standard—only Palestinians.

Worst of all, this article feeds into the lie that recognition of Palestinian statehood is a "reward" rather than a right. The world is waking up to the fact that Israel will never willingly end its apartheid system, which is why more nations are recognizing Palestine now. But Leibler and his ilk want to keep Palestinians in limbo forever, dangling statehood just out of reach while Israel annexes more land.

The Sydney Morning Herald should be ashamed for publishing this garbage. You are amplifying the rhetoric of a genocide apologist while Palestinians are being slaughtered in real time. We demand an immediate retraction, a public apology, and an editorial commitment to stop platforming Zionist propaganda that justifies ethnic cleansing.

Free Palestine. End the occupation. And you will be held accountable for your role in justifying this horrific genocide, just as journalists were in the Nuremburg trials.
